No one wants to get infected with any chronic and deadly disease, but certain diseases are hard to treat, if not treated in time. While we have certainly heard of the deadly HIV disease there are various myths and rumors that circulate in the society that makes the disease appear more dreadful and complicated. HIV – Human Immunodeficiency Virus – a slowly replicating retrovirus can lead to AIDS, a condition in humans that leads to progressive failure of the immune system allowing life-threatening diseases and infections to thrive within the human body. AIDS is the late stage of HIV infection and therefore, timely detection of the HIV virus is important to control the spread of the virus within the body.

One of the biggest concerns is whether you should get an HIV test done or not. HIV is spread through blood and genital fluids which include pre-seminal fluids, semen or breast milk. Hence, one can be infected with HIV, if engaged in an unprotected sex; other types of sexual behavior with an HIV infected person, or sharing needles, syringes, and other injection equipment.

So, the questions you need to ask yourself are:

    • Have you shared needles, syringes and injection equipment with others? Or have you injected drugs or steroids?
    • Have you had unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex with men who have sex with multiple or anonymous partners?
    • Have you ever been diagnosed with or treated for hepatitis, tuberculosis or sexually transmitted disease like syphilis?

If your answer to any of the above questions is yes, then you need to get tested for HIV.

Most HIV tests are antibodies tests that measure the amount of presence of antibodies within the body and therefore there are various HIV test types. Most people develop detectable antibodies within 2 to 8 weeks so there are chances that the initial tests may have negative results.

To detect these antibodies, patients can go through various HIV test types like:

    • HIV 1 & 2 (Spot Test) – Rs. 250/-
    • HIV 1, 2 & P24 Antigen (ELISA) – Rs. 1200/-
    • HIV Western Blot – Rs. 2500/-

Spot Test – Spot tests also known as rapid tests can be done using a blood sample or oral fluids and these tests can be done from a few days to few weeks to get a confirm report.

ELISA Test – ELISA abbreviation for enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay detects and measures antibodies in your blood. This test is often used as a screening tool before more in-depth tests are ordered to detect the signs and symptoms of the conditions.

p24 Antigen Test – Antigens are usually substances that are found in a foreign body or a germ that can trigger the production of antibodies within the host body. The antigen on HIV that usually provokes an antibody response is the protein p24. When p24 is produced in excess it can be detected in the blood serum. Fourth generation tests are now being conducted that combines the earlier HIV tests with p24 tests and that speeds up the process of detecting the HIV virus early on.

Western Blot Test – A Western Blot test combines of two tests, an ELISA test and an HIV 1 Western Blot test that will confirm the HIV infection. If the antibodies are detected after the initial ELISA test, the HIV 1 Western Blot test is conducted to determine the size of the antigens to offer an accurate picture of the HIV infection.
