What is a Urine Pregnancy Test?

It is a simple urine test to determine if a woman is pregnant. It tests for a hormone called human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG). HCG is released when a fertilized egg attaches to the lining of the uterus. HCG is only found in a woman's body if she is pregnant.

How soon can you take a pregnancy test?

Early pregnancy tests can now be taken some days even before your period is due – but the earlier you take the test, the less reliable the result.

How soon is the HCG hormone detected in the urine?

The hCG hormone is produced right after a fertilized egg attaches to the wall of a woman's uterus. This is know at implantation. hCG can be detected in urine or blood after implantation, which occurs six to twelve days after fertilization.

Most doctors recommend that you wait until the first day of your missed period before taking a urine pregnancy test. This is usually about two weeks after conception.

How accurate is the urine pregnancy test?

Urine tests or home pregnancy tests are around 97% accurate when done correctly. However many home pregnancy tests are not sensitive enough to diagnose pregnancy in women who have recently missed a period. For the most reliable results, wait to take the test until one week after your missed period.

Some laboratories also conduct the urine test in case you are not able to procure the home pregnancy test in your vicinity.

What are the precautions to take before taking the test?

Use the first morning urine sample for the test. This urine is the most concentrated and will contain the highest hCG levels of the day. Your urine dilutes as you drink liquids, so hCG levels may be harder to measure later in the day.

If you test positive, it means that the test detected hCG in your urine. Your next step should be to consult a gynaecologist. They can confirm pregnancy with a physical checkup and additional testing (a sonography and blood test, if necessary.

If the urine pregnancy test is negative, does that mean you are not pregnant?

A negative result can mean that you are not pregnant OR you took the test too early OR you took the test wrong. Pregnancy tests vary in their sensitivity (how soon they can detect the hormone hCG), and you may not have given your body enough time to produce enough hCG hormones that will show up on the test.

Also, if you let the home pregnacny test sit for too long (past the time duration the instructions on the box tell you), then the test is invalid. It is best to follow the instructions and wait until you have missed a period before taking the test.

What if you get different answers on two urine pregnancy tests?

If you have received different answers on multiple pregnancy tests, it is recommended that you get a blood test done to get an accurate answer. This is known as a beta hCG test and is usually more accurate than urine pregnancy tests done at home or at a pathology laboratory.
