Doctors generally use the term "uveitis" to refer to inflammation within the eye not due to infection. Uveitis affects the uvea, which is the layer of the eye beneath the white of the eye (sclera). It consists of the iris, choroid and ciliary body.

The most common type of uveitis is an inflammation of the iris called iritis (anterior uveitis). In many cases, the cause of uveitis can't be determined. However, it can be associated with autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and with exposure to toxins.

We Uveitis usually is serious. Early diagnosis and treatment are important in preventing permanent vision loss. Treatment typically includes anti-inflammatory medications, such as corticosteroids.
