What is Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate test?

In this test, the lab measures abnormal proteins present in your blood. When abnormal proteins are present in your blood it makes your red blood cells cling together and form blood lumps. These lumps fall quickly when placed in the measuring tube. The ESR test measures the speed at which the red blood cells fall to the bottom of the tube.

Why your doctor may order an ESR test?

Majority of the doctors suggest this test when you’re experiencing inflammation. In most cases, the doctors look at the ESR test results along with other tests to evaluate your health condition. The ESR test is also suggested when diagnosing conditions like cancers, infections and autoimmune disorders. If you are suffering from rheumatoid arthritis or systematic lupus erythematosus your doctor might order this test. The ESR test is usually never performed alone.

How do you prepare for the ESR test?

An ESR test is a simple blood test and therefore you don’t need to fast before the test or prepare for it. However, different medications and drugs might alter or affect the results of an ESR test. It is important that you inform your doctor if you’re taking medications and if you should stop taking medications before you take an ESR test. On the other hand, there are certain health problems that can also influence the overall results. Health problems like thyroid diseases, pregnancy, kidney issues, anaemia, infections, and old age can affect the overall results of your ESR test.

What is the normal range in ESR test?

ESR test results are measured in millimetres per hour (mm/hr). The normal ESR test range for males can be from 0 to 20 mm/hr and 0 to 30 mm/hr for females.
