    Order Test Online

Our blood contains many nutrients that need to be at the right levels. A lot of foods that we eat contain phosphorous and eventually, that impacts the level of phosphorus in our blood. Phosphorous is important for our health because it helps in repairing bones and teeth, improves nerve function and make muscles contract. Get your phosphorous level checked regularly or if you are suffering from certain health issues. The amount of phosphorus in our blood seriously impacts the level of calcium in the blood.

    What is Phosphorous testing?

A phosphorous testing also known as phosphate testing is a type of blood test that measures the amount of phosphate in the blood. A phosphate is a charged ion in our blood that contains phosphorous.

    Why is phosphorus testing done?

Phosphorous testing is done usually to measure the phosphate in the blood. This testing is done when the patient is suffering from kidney or bone disease. It is also done to diagnose parathyroid glands and to evaluate the reason behind abnormal Vitamin D levels.

How do I prepare for the test?

Iif you are taking medications you must inform your doctor. Medicines like epinephrine and acetazolamide can affect the results. Additionally, excessive dose of sugar (glucose) can spike the insulin levels and drop the phosphorous levels.

    What do the results indicate?

The normal range of phosphorous varies from lab to lab. Additionally, the test alone will not be able to focus on your overall health. Hence, your doctor will evaluate your health based on the results of the test and other tests of chloride, sodium, potassium, and magnesium and blood urea nitrogen. Higher values usually indicate lymphoma, kidney diseases, and excessive Vitamin D while lower values indicate a lack of Vitamin D, malnutrition, high calcium levels, tumours and excessive alcohol consumption.

Below are normal values for phosphate testing
Milligrams per decilitre (mg/dL) Millimoles per Litre (mmol/L)
    Newborns 4.5 – 9.0 1.45 – 2.91
    Children 4.5 – 5.5 1.45 – 1.78
    Adults 2.7 – 4.5 0.87 – 1.45
