Disha Pathology Services is the only laboratory in Mumbai that offers comprehensive testing for all ocular diseases

Uveitis
Doctors generally use the term "uveitis" to refer to inflammation within the eye not due to infection. Uveitis affects the uvea, which is the layer of the eye beneath the white of the eye (sclera). It consists of the iris, choroid and ciliary body.

The most common type of uveitis is an inflammation of the iris called iritis (anterior uveitis). In many cases, the cause of uveitis can't be determined. However, it can be associated with autoimmune disorders, such as rheumatoid arthritis, and with exposure to toxins.

Signs and symptoms of uveitis may include:

  • Eye redness
  • Eye pain
  • Light sensitivity
  • Blurred vision
  • Dark, floating spots in the vision

Uveitis usually is serious. Early diagnosis and treatment are important in preventing permanent vision loss. Treatment typically includes anti-inflammatory medications, such as corticosteroids.

Operation Theatre Surveillance Programme

Hospital Acquired Infections or Nosocomial infections are those which occur in hospitalized patients and which were not present or incubating at the time of admission.

Therefore, it is the need of the hour for hospitals, nursing homes, clinics and any facility with areas that require a sterility check to ensure that their environment (eg operating room) is sterile according to international standards and guidelines.

Disha Pathology Services provides a service for the microbiological surveillance of operation theatres for a nominal cost.

We assess the operation theatre and give guidelines based on international standards on the disinfection and sterilization procedures that should be followed.

A monthly surveillance is usually recommended but it can be scheduled as per your requirements.

Why is it necessary to involve pathology in infection control?

The pathologist is responsible for
  • handling patient and staff specimens to maximize the likelihood of a microbiological diagnosis
  • developing guidelines for appropriate collection, transport, and handling of specimens
  • ensuring laboratory practices meet appropriate standards
  • ensuring safe laboratory practice to prevent infections in staff
  • performing antimicrobial susceptibility testing following internationally recognized methods, and providing summary reports of prevalence of resistance
  • monitoring sterilization, disinfection and the environment where necessary
  • epidemiological typing of hospital microorganisms where necessary

A typical surveillance report of the operation theatre environment would include the following:

  • Site of collection
  • Date of collection
  • Name of the person collecting the samples
  • The colony count of the aerial flora
  • Predominant organisms isolated along with their colony counts
  • Water potability and coliform count
  • Autoclave efficiency by biological indicators

Clinical Research

Inherent advantages such as low costs, access to a vast patient population and a large base of qualified personnel has made India an attractive destination for clinical research outsourcing (CRO). India's clinical research market, valued at $75 million currently, is set to increase to $500 million by 2010.

However, the crucial aspects that will influence the success rate of India's CRO endeavors include good quality of data and the adherence to good clinical practices.

At Disha Pathology Services, we adhere to ICH GCP standards, thus making our laboratory a destination for testing required by clinical trials and projects. If your project requires blood investigation for a specific test, we can assist you to plan and execute the research process.

Disha Pathology Services is committed to providing accurate and timely laboratory testing services for the research community. We recognize that each clinical trial is unique and strive to customise services for each trial.

This information is designed to give you, the investigator or study coordinator, a process to follow to obtain current laboratory prices to determine a budget for your clinical trial.

Since each clinical trial has specific laboratory testing requirements, we will need study-specific information from you to determine which laboratory services are required. Information about your study can be supplied to us in a number of ways; in person, verbally over the telephone, by email, by letter, fax or preferably by sending the laboratory portion or full study protocol to Disha Pathology.

Additional time may be required to obtain a price on new or esoteric tests. We will document the laboratory study requirements after protocol review and/ or consultation with you. Subsequently we will assess the impact of the study on the laboratory and will prepare a letter for you outlining the laboratory prices and special requirements associated with the study.

Conducting Research
Researchers must obtain appropriate institutional approval and have proposals approved by the appropriate scientific and ethics review committee prior to starting each study involving clinical data obtained through Disha Pathology Services.
